Title: Hank Williams: 28 Original Hits In Stereo

Artist: Hank Williams

Reviewer: Andrew Smith

Review date: 28/02/2022

Release Number: Hit Parade Records 12329

At first glance, this CD appears to be nothing more than a reissue of Hank Williams’ “greatest hits” (although it doesn’t include “Mansion On The Hill”). The “in stereo” tag might be a warning, though, since Hank’s recordings were all in mono, though after his death MGM tried all sorts of gimmicks to “modernize” his music, from adding string sections to his recordings to releasing fake duets with him seemingly singing with his son.

But don’t be deceived: all 28 tracks here have been remastered using state-of-the-art software, including Steinberg Spectral Layers Pro, DeMix Pro and Audionamix TRAX Pro to provide a sound that’s probably as close as anyone is likely to obtain of Hank singing in stereo.

To my ears, the results are very impressive, though not mind blowing. At the very least, this is a generous compilation of many of his best-known songs with impressive remastering. This album should complement the original mono recordings so beloved by purists; and for a new collector the set has 28 well-known Hank Williams standards.
